A message for 3rd Year Students from CEO - Rich Woldt

Thank you for putting CUNA Management School on your career path and my RM sessions on your calendar. You're in your final year of what has been a journey that tested your metal, challenged your mind, and introduced you to a cadre of experienced Risk Managers around the world. You studied hard, learned much and are now ready to take command.

This year we'll focus on taking command during the next disaster, terrorist attack or large scale crisis in your community. Some of you have law enforcement or fire fighting experience, so you'll quickly recognize the Incident Command System we've adopted to the credit union movement. Our goal is to foster public to private and chapter to chapter partnerships that will respond in a "unified" command the next time disaster strikes.

  1. To take full advantage of our time in the classroom, I need you to help me benchmark your knowledge of contingency planning and the Incident Command System.  Please click here to benchmark your class test before we meet.  These tests and surveys DO NOT identify the person completing them. My only purpose is to benchmark you class and focus on RM information most important to your class.
  2. Our time together this year will follow the format of a summit so we can benefit from our collective experiences during Katrina. To give us a head start, I'm asking all CUNA Management School students and graduates for their input prior to class. Please click here to complete a short survey of your best and worst practices during hurricane season 2004 and 2005.   Again, I'm not interested in tracking who completed the survey. But it would be interesting to know you job title or position with the credit union.
  • No one has all the right answers and there is no silver bullet. To successfully manage our risks we need to sharing our experiences, addressing our fears, and confront our failures. Our time together in class will take the form of a "summit" rather than a lecture or presentation. I wrote a Risk Management "white paper" for your third year class that summarizes best practice I learned during my research of disasters to include hurricanes, tornados, wildfires, and terrorist attacks.  Please click here to download my white paper titled "A Risk Management Perspective on Katrina - Nine Months Later!

The 1/2 life of education is the time it take for us to forget 1/2 of what we learned. At my age that's about 10 days. While I'm sure it's longer for most of you, we want to make sure you're well equipped to carry your newly found RM wisdom home to your credit union and credit union chapter. While we'll have handouts available, you can also click here to download handouts I plan to distribute to all CUNA Management School students.

Thank you 3rd year CUNA Management School students. I look forward to meeting you all, sharing my RM research and learning from your class.  Rich Woldt CEO The Risk Management Learning Center.
