Preface
& Contents By Rich Woldt
This year's workbook has
six chapters. In
Chapter I, we
survey CUNA Mutual and
Credit Union Risk Managers to
"benchmark" our 2006 RM
programs and projects. In
Chapter II, we
retrain and introduce
alternative RM research and
development (R&D) strategies
for 2007. In
Chapter III, we
update RMA data sheets and
review written
reports to ensure we're
supporting CM underwriting and
claims personnel and our
recommendations are being
implemented at the credit union
level.
Chapter
IV, we refresh our RM
workshops and presentations and
plan for a series of 2007 RM discussions and
fireside chats with our Credit
Union Risk Managers. In
Chapter V,
we
take advanced training in CUNA Mutual's
Unified
Incident Command and Control
System. This system adopts the
"Incident Command System (ICS)
and National Incident Management
System (NIMS) required teaching
for law enforcement, fire
fighters, and emergency
governments to the credit union
movement.
Finally, in
Chapter VI,
we write our 2007 Mission
Statement and outline our
RM Strategic Action Plans to support
CUNA Mutual' missions in the UK.

Chapter I...Benchmarking
compares the status of each RM
project to the expectations we
had when we wrote our project
mission statements and strategic
action plans.
Benchmarking help us
measure our accomplishments,
identify process improvements,
and focus our RM training in
2007.

Chapter
II...The internet has opened new
research and development (R&D)
"windows" of opportunity.
Our R&D can now focuse on a
specific credit union,
community, or region in which
CUNA Mutual has a concentration
of bonded credit unions or
potential for a larger than
expected claim.

Chapter III...Data
sheets are hard to live
them yet we can't do our job
with out them! They
are a necessary tool we use to
identify and measure risks we're
pooling for the UK credit union
movement, and they're our first line of
defense when someone challenges
our recommendations.

Chapter
IV..."Hand a credit union a loaf of bread
and we feed them for a day! Teach them to plant wheat
and we feed them for a life time!
RM programs, presentations, and
workshops in 2007 will continue
to guide and direct but they'll
also focus more on cross
training in the UK credit union
movement and building
international RM partnerships
between all CUNA Mutual markets.

Chapter
V...Katrina initially inflicted massive
property and casualty losses,
however, it was the subsequent
breakdown in social order and
response protocols that spiraled
P&C and fidelity bond
losses out of control.
CUNA Mutual's "unified"
Incident Command and Control
System, tested in the Caribbean
during Hurricane Ivan, stands
mission ready to deploy during
the next natural disaster,
terrorist attack, pandemic, or
community crisis.

Chapter VI... Mission statements make sure
everyone is on the same page.
Strategic action plans make sure
everyone is mission ready, aware
of their responsibilities, and
empowered to act!
