A message for 1st Year Students from - Rich Woldt

Thank you for putting CUNA Management School on your career path and my RM sessions on your calendar. You're about to start a three year journey that will test your metal, challenge your mind, and introduce you to Risk Managers from around the world. You're coming to Southwest CUNA Management School at a most exciting time in our credit union history. Robberies, burglaries, embezzlements, scams, and a host of life threatening risks are on the increase. Communities and countries are being devastated by natural disasters, terrorist attacks, tsunamis and pandemics. Our goal during your first year will be to introduce you to Risk Management as a "method of management" you'll use to identify, measure, and control risks your credit union faces each day.  You'll learn to conduct self assessments, create controllable crime scenes, and how to take command during the next life threatening crisis.
  1. To take full advantage of our time in the classroom, I want to benchmark your knowledge of Risk Management principles and methods.  This quiz does not identify you but rather provides me with an overall class score so that I might focus on risks important to your class. While on line, please click here to complete a 10 question survey.
  2. Homeland security terrorist alerts indicate there will be another attack within the US before the end of the year. The National Weather Service predicts another active hurricane season in 2006. We will be remiss if we don't spend some time discussing credit union's contingency plans and emergency response protocols. While on line, please click here to complete a short survey of your best and worst practices during hurricane season.
  3. The day before class you'll receive the results of your 1st year class' benchmarking survey and the CUNA Management School survey of Katrina best and worst practices.
  4. The week before class you'll be briefed on the status of the most recent Incident Command.  (click here)!  Rich Woldt
Students:  When you "click" below to download white papers, self assessments, and handouts, you'll be viewing some of the handouts you'll receive in class. I welcome you to download any and all these items. There are many other white papers on my site you can also read at your leisure.

Southwest CUNA Management School

First Year "white papers" and handouts to download before class:

  • No one has all the right answers and there is no silver bullet. To successfully manage our risks we need to share our experiences, address our fears, and confront our failures. Our time together in class will take the form of a "summit" rather than a lecture or presentation. I wrote a Risk Management "white paper" for your first year class that will focus our discussion on life threatening acts of violence in the workplace (robbery, bomb threats, extortion, terrorist attacks, looting, gang warfare, strikes, etc.). Our goal will be to improve RM methods as they relate to protecting executives, employees confronting angry members, those handling and transporting currency, travelers, etc. Please click here to download my white paper titled "Managing Executive and Self Protection Risks."
  • Self assessments play an important role in the Risk Management process. During class you'll learn the most effective and efficient way to complete a self assessment. While on line, please click here to download a burglary/robbery self assessment form. I suggest you complete this assessment for the office in which you work. We will not discuss the  confidential security information you collect, but rather we'll talk about the experience you had completing the assessment.
  • The 1/2 life of education is the time it take for us to forget 1/2 of what we learned. At my age that's about 10 days. While I'm sure it's longer for most of you, we want to make sure you're well equipped to carry your newly found RM wisdom home to your credit union and credit union chapter. While we'll have handouts available, you can also click here to download handouts I plan to distribute to all CUNA Management School students.

Thank you 1st year Southwest CUNA Management School students for taking the first step on what will prove to be a world class learning experience. It's been my privilege to work in the CUNA Management School system for over 40 years.  Each year I look forward to meeting you all, sharing my RM research and learning from your class.
