August 1, 2006...The 2006 WOCCU Conference is history but its benefits have just begun!

I do all my own web maintenance so I apologize in advance if some links don't work. You can always find everything in our R&D library.  Also, thanks to firewalls and blockers, I don't always get your emails. I suspect some of mine are also being block. I stopped sending RM e-News in 2003 and send only two planned mass emails a year.  Rich

Thank you WOCCU and the Irish League of Credit Unions of all you did to make this conference a huge success. We reviewed the latest in disaster response best practices, launched a global version of the Credit Union Incident Command System, and heard from those who survived tsunamis, hurricanes, terrorist attacks, and tornados. Refer to the WOCCU CD for comments from Katrina survivor Chris Maurer, CEO University of New Orleans FCU, and branch banking advocate Carroll Beach, President of the Credit Union Services Corporation. Click here for a direct link to Carroll's  http://www.cusc.net/ web site. Tsunami survivor Ranjith Hettiarachchi, CEO Association of Asian Confederation of Credit Unions is sending me the visuals he used during our session to post in our R&D library. And Click here for a master copy of my program on credit union best RM practices before, during, and after disasters. And read my white papers on Katrina Best practices (Click Here). Click on 1st responders, victims, and evacuees  for trifolds you can forward to credit union employees and chapter leaders.

I do all my own web maintenance and design, so if the above links don't work, look below for links I posted before the conference. You can also reach these link through our R&D Department, and posted white papers. Please don't hesitate translating these handouts to your own language. All I ask is you email me a copy so I might post them in my library for others to read!

A message from - Rich Woldt CEO The Risk Management Learning Center

Welcome WOCCU members and International Credit Union Risk Managers. Thank you for attending the 2006 World Credit Union Conference and our "summit" titled "Preparing For and Rising Above Natural Disasters. We're holding this "summit" because you're part of a world movement focused on preparing for and responding to any natural disaster. In Dublin, I'll be joined by Carroll Beach, President of the Credit Union Service Corporation in Duluth GA, and Chris Mauer, President/CEO UNO Federal Credit Union - University of New Orleans. Carroll and Chris will share their "hands-on" experiences with Hurricane Katrina and I'll report on the "best practices" of our International Credit Union Risk Managers and the success we've had using the Credit Union Incident Command System.

August 1, 2006... Please complete the RM surveys under my picture in the right column. These surveys help benchmark or compare your Risk Management programs to an international RM performance standard. I've been privileged to work at WOCCU conferences since WOCCU was organized in 1971 and A. A. Patty Bailey lead the charge to safeguard the world credit union movement. Thanks to Patty, WOCCU, and the Irish Credit Union League for allowing me to be part of your world class movement. As tsunami victim Ranjith Hettiarachchi highlighted in his comments (click here) we've faced disasters in the past and we'll face new danger in our future. However, because our grassroots movement in inherently a "people helping people" movement we'll be ready to take command and control the next time disaster strikes. We don't know if it's going to be another hurricane or tsunami, or pandemic, or terrorist attack. What we do know is thanks to your taking the time to assemble in Dublin, our movement will be ready to take command and control of whatever endangers our members.

July 30, 2006... Thank YOU International Credit Union Risk Managers who attended WOCCU Conference in Dublin!   I commend you all for your RM efforts to control risks and reduce losses during the natural disasters (hurricanes, floods, tsunamis, etc.) of '05 and 2006.  Click here for a master copy of the power point visuals I used at this 2006 World Credit Union Conference. I encourage you to brief your local fire chief and Director of Emergency Government on how the credit union movement is using the Incident Command System. Click here to download my summary of the ICS we used when Ivan hit Jamaica.

So that we can learn from our experience with Katrina, please complete the "Katrina Best and Worst Practices"(Click here) and read my white papers on Katrina Best practices (Click Here). Thank you also for distributing the Instructions for 1st responders, victims, and evacuees.  I suggest you also read the handouts I used at CUNA Management Schools this year and monitor our R&D department for updates on the Credit Union Incident Command System.

Southwest CUNA Management students and credit union leaders who attended the Western States Conference in Las Vegas are helping me design a credit union specific Incident Command log-in survey. This survey simply gives us a faster way for credit unions to tell incident commanders what they might be able to deliver to the incident staging areas. We're using such a survey to assemble Wisconsin veteran' resources for the incident commander of the Ellison Bay gas explosions. If you're a US military veteran, please complete the Incident Command Veteran Log-In Survey (click here). I'm using that incident to field test this protocol. I can see such a survey being used by your sponsor or any organization responding to a disaster. Keep an eye on www.cops007.com site as that's the site I'll be using to role out much of this in 2007. The goal is to have each industry function as a "unified" command during the next natural disaster or terrorist attack. Expect to hear more about the Incident Command System and NIMS in 2007.

Thank you all for whatever role you've played in past disasters and for your willingness to share your best practices for our future.  Your input and best practices will help to save lives, reduce property damage, and speed our recovery from the next disaster. I hope to see you all at furture WOCCU Conferences.
